Off the shoulder + a pop of red

July 12, 2016

We’ve been trying to make an effort to go on more date nights lately because…well, a toddler will do that to you. šŸ™‚ I wore this outfit on Saturday to dinner and an engagement party. I bought thisĀ off the shoulder dress when I was in Cancun last month. Shopping in a different country is the best, especially when the exchange rate makes the dress an even better deal. This dress was a steal atĀ  $49, and it’s one of the most comfortable summer dresses I now own.

I didn’t see it at Zara in the U.S., so I’ve linked to similar Zara options here and here. I plan to embrace the off the shoulder trend the next couple of months since you’ll pretty much melt if you go outside lately. So, I’ll be wearing this dress and this one, too, until about November. šŸ˜‰

Off the shoulder dress with a pop of red for date night

We decided to make the most out our night outĀ  and hit up a restaurant in the neighborhood called Coltivare. I’ve been wanting to try this place since it opened, but we’ve never got around to it because they don’t take reservations, and I don’t like going places and waiting.Ā  I use my Opentable app like a crazy lady and pre-book places and just cancel a few days prior if I know I won’t make it.Ā  I decided to stray away from my reservations-only rule and try this Italian spot, which I’ve only heard good things about. I’ve been told you need to arrive early and the typical wait time is an hour. We arrived at 6pm – our typical, toddler-enforced eating time, and we were told the wait was, in fact, an hour. Eek. Instead of grabbing a drink in the courtyard and melting waiting in the lovely Houston humidity, we went right down the street to Gelazzi, a fabulous gelato shop that has this great mural to snap a few photos. We’ve taken many a photos in front of this wall, even some that made our first Christmas card with Braden. I love the Heights, and I’m a little sad to be moving away from this great neighborhood filled with some of the city’s best restaurants and photoworthy locales, BUT we’re basically moving to the next neighborhood over, so I know we’ll still be going to a lot of these places. I’ve just really enjoyed the convenience of throwing a bottle of wine in the stroller and walking to BYOB restaurants or trying out the row of great eateries such as Bernadine’s, Hunky Dory and Cane Russo, which are allĀ  a five minute walk from our house.

The one hour wait for Coltivare was actually about 25 minutes. Score! I think an hour wait would have been worth it, though. The pizza was AMAZING, and I had the BEST heirloom tomato salad ever. Everything is super fresh and made with herbs and veggies from their garden. Ben doesn’t even like tomatoes that much but he liked this salad. It was beautiful and flavorful. We also had some chicken wings that were super spicy yet tasty, but also a little messy. I let Ben choose the pizza (pepperoni, so adventurous) and appetizer since pizza is like his life blood. We had some yummy cocktails, too, including their version of the Gin and Tonic, which was minty and refreshing. I will definitely go back again soon.Ā  I highly recommend it if you’re in the area!

So, with my perfect pizza-eating dress ( I love a roomy dress after carb-filled meal), I paired it with some of my favorite summer heels for a nice pop of color. I picked these shoes up from Ann Taylor online recently. I buy about 95% of my shoes online because no one ever has my size. #TallgirlwithbigfeetproblemsĀ  I have a lot of Ann Taylor shoes — almost more than I care to admit — but they’re really well-made and have great heel heights. The shoes are “fire glow orange” but they look more red to me and punch up neutrals quite nicely. This J.Crew clutch is a few years old but still use it during the summer months.

Hope your week has started off great, y’all!

Athleisure

May 26, 2016

I pretty much wear workout clothes all weekend long whether Iā€™m working out or not. But, more often than not, I’m heading to spin at Define on Saturday morning. I’ve been a pretty big Rev fan since they started it a few years ago. I credit it for helping me lose all my baby weight within a couple of months after B was born. I try to be active throughout the weekend, going on pretty long neighborhood walks and often doubling up and doing yoga on Saturday and Sunday evenings since Iā€™m not really working out as often as I used to on weekdays. A 7:45pm toddler bedtime will do that to ya. So, I’m changing in and out of workout wear all weekend long.

Ā I picked up a few things at the Nordstrom half yearly sale, which just kicked off this week and is running through June 5. Itā€™s a great opportunity to stock up on some staple athleisure wear pieces at a fraction of the cost. I bought a new pair of Nike tennis shoes from the sale yesterday and a few other things online to add to my weekend wardrobe.

Ā Happy sweating! šŸ˜‰

Off the shoulder

May 9, 2016

Off-the-shoulder tops and dresses will be a warm-weather staple for many this spring and summer including me. I like that this dress is roomy and overall pretty simple.Ā  I wore this dress on two separate occasions the past two weekends – for date night and a daytime party with friends. Depending on your shoes and accessories, you can dress it up or make it more casual. Most days I’m too lazy to change out my handbag, so I toting one of my usual Mary Poppins bags. Open shoulder tops are great, too,Ā  and I’ve linked to a couple items I have that are casual and comfortable. I am a bit broad shouldered, so finding the right balance with tops that show a little skin is key. I try to balance an open shouldered top with skinny jeans or with some leg so I don’t look like one big blob of fabric!side back 4

Pineapple

April 25, 2016

Pineapple seems to be all the rage these days, and Iā€™m definitely a fan. I noticed its popularity last summer, but Iā€™m seeing it more and more lately. I donā€™t shy away from a whimsical print. Donā€™t get me wrong ā€“ I would never where multiple pineapple prints or accessories together, but I think it can be festive to pop a pineapple motif in with some other spring and summer basics. Plus, I almost instantly feel like itā€™ll be a cheery day when I wear one of these fun pieces.

I snatched up these cute pineapple studs in Charleston, SC during a fun bachelorette trip last summer but Iā€™ve since picked up a few pineapple pieces over the past few weeks to brighten up some other wardrobe staples.

I wish I was holding a pineapple drink in hand on a tropical getaway, but until then Iā€™ll be wearing a few of these instead.

Iā€™ve rounded up a few of my favorites. Enjoy!

Sand and swim on my mind

April 5, 2016

I have a mental countdown clock ticking away until vacation. Shopbop has been a go-to for me the past few years and even more so lately since I do about 80% of my shopping online. They recently had a ā€œBig Eventā€ sale where I picked up a few items and thankfully theyā€™re having one of their Friends and Family sales now. Enter INTHEFAM at checkout for 25% off full-price and sale items through 4/7.

A couple Ā of these items like this Marysia Ā top and bottom Iā€™ve already picked up, but I have my eye on a few more for some events I have coming up including my Mexico trip.

Dreaming of sunny skies and sand beneath my toes until then.

Work to Weekend Style

March 21, 2016

I love button-upĀ shirts. Paired with the right denim or a pencil skirt, this classic top can be perfectĀ for the office. Just throw on a blazer or cardigan to dress it up even more and make it work for multiple seasons. Styled with skinny jeans, itā€™s a go-to weekend outfit. Silk button-up shirts are easy to dress up for dinner out or for work, too. I have a few fun, printed silk shirts and colored silk buttons-ups that Iā€™ve had for years.

Saturday afternoon walk in the neighborhood with B. He loves sunglasses now and I may have an obsession with all things from Baby Zara and Toms shoes for toddlers.

Iā€™ve been finding quite a bit at Banana that I like lately. This linen shirt is casual and light, and I could see myself wearing it with shorts once that Houston heat hits. Who am I kidding ā€“ we are having some sort of fluke spring weather, but I’m sure it will be short-lived and we’ll be back to humidity soon.Ā Ā I wore this shirt 2 weeks ago with yellow shorts when running errands in fact. The weather was amazing this weekend, and we took advantage by walkingĀ Ā around our neighborhood Saturday afternoon, hitting up our favorite toy store, Big Blue Whale, and getting some frozen yogurt. This outfit was perfect for this fun afternoon with my favorite toddler.

Big Blue Whale in the Heights is the most magical toy store! If you live in Houston, definitely check it out. We frequent it weekly. šŸ™‚

Sometimes long-sleeve shirts like thisĀ can be hard to find the right fit. Iā€™ve curated quite the collection, so I know what brands work for me and my long limbs. I buy tall long- sleeve shirts and blazers when theyā€™re available from Banana, in particular. Banana Republic, J. Crew and Ann Taylor are 3Ā stores that sell tall sizes, which means a little more length in the arms and width in the shoulders, which makes this 5ā€™10 gal a happy camper.

Mary Poppins Moment: What’s in my bag

March 9, 2016

Does anyone have a soft tape measure?

Me: Yes! I do. Here you go.

This is a real conversation Iā€™ve had with a coworker. Iā€™ve been known to have everything under the sun in my handbag. Just call me Mary Poppins. Before I was a mom, I assumed the mom role among by friends and co-workers, always ready with meds, snacks, a hair tie or whatever else was needed by someone.

I decided I would show a real snapshot of what I carry in my bag day-to-day.

First off, letā€™s talk about the bag. Unless Iā€™m going to a wedding or a night out where I can carry a clutch for just a few hours, I just need a big bag. Iā€™ve always been this way, but when I became a mom, this rang true tenfold.

Iā€™ve been carrying this Tory Burch tote for nearly two years. It’s a plum color that doesn’t seem to be available anymore, but there are some other classic colors available.Ā  I swap it out with other similar-sized bags occasionally, but itā€™s a simple everyday bag that can double as a work and diaper bag when needed. I have my eye out for a new spring bag…or ten. P.S. It’s my birth month dear, sweet husband.
Speaking of diaper bags, I have a basic navy messenger baby bag that I use mostly for weekend outings to the zoo, travel or other trips out and about, but mostly I just throw a few diapers, changing mat and travel wipes in my everyday purse and Iā€™m all set. Iā€™m thinking Iā€™ll buy ToteSavvy, an insert that will keep things a bit more organized, especially when youā€™re in the bottle-toting stage. Not in the bottle-stage anymore, but still toting a sippy cup most days since I have a 18-month-old.
