Off the shoulder

May 9, 2016

Off-the-shoulder tops and dresses will be a warm-weather staple for many this spring and summer including me. I like that this dress is roomy and overall pretty simple.  I wore this dress on two separate occasions the past two weekends – for date night and a daytime party with friends. Depending on your shoes and accessories, you can dress it up or make it more casual. Most days I’m too lazy to change out my handbag, so I toting one of my usual Mary Poppins bags. Open shoulder tops are great, too,  and I’ve linked to a couple items I have that are casual and comfortable. I am a bit broad shouldered, so finding the right balance with tops that show a little skin is key. I try to balance an open shouldered top with skinny jeans or with some leg so I don’t look like one big blob of fabric!side back 4

Piece by piece

May 5, 2016

We’ve seen some progress with the framing of the first floor in the past few days. It’s really helping me understand the scale of each room and  the layout a little more.

Mudroom frame 2

This is the mudroom. (Can’t you tell? Duh. 😉 ) I was really particular about this room in the house. We even designed a special place for Guy Harvey, our beloved cat we lost unexpectedly last Dec. We’ll still build that special spot for him, and one day perhaps another cat will join our family and occupy it.

I have a post in the works that might be helpful to anyone considering building a home. I hope to have that up next week. The whole process is definitely not for the faint of heart. It’s a big commitment in many ways to build a home, and I kind of have a lot on my plate in general right now. I’m starting to realize maybe I’ve bit off more than I can chew in many areas of life, but I’ve realized that “good enough” is the best I can do on any given day and the only person who knows that I’m giving my version of “good enough” is probably just me.

This season of life is tough. I’ve been thinking about how much life has changed in the past 2 years since Braden joined our family. I’m exhausted, and all the decisions for the house make me even more tired. I know this season will pass and one day I’ll wish for more nights when Braden curls up on my chest to fall asleep.

Looking forward to the weekend. Are you?

Framing

April 28, 2016

After the terrible rain and Houston flooding that made national headlines last week, we’re finally seeing some better weather, which means a little progress on the home front. We’ve stopped by the house twice this week and saw that they drew some chalk lines one day and then started framing the next day.

Chalk Lines

Inspector Braden

B playing with nails

B likes to go around the site and collect nails. (Just a coincidence that he is wearing pants that have screws and washers on them. Baby Zara has the best everyday baby clothes for boys!) He found a bunch of washers and started counting and stacking them. I love that he’s really into counting and the ABCs these days. Such a little sponge.

B pointingBraden always enjoys going to what we call the “contruction site.” His eyes light up when dad says this like it’s the candy store. Totally all boy.

Framing

With the framing up, I’m able to envision the layout and rooms a little better now, too. Hopefully, we have some clear skies so we continue to see more progress this week!

Pineapple

April 25, 2016

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9

Pineapple seems to be all the rage these days, and I’m definitely a fan. I noticed its popularity last summer, but I’m seeing it more and more lately. I don’t shy away from a whimsical print. Don’t get me wrong – I would never where multiple pineapple prints or accessories together, but I think it can be festive to pop a pineapple motif in with some other spring and summer basics. Plus, I almost instantly feel like it’ll be a cheery day when I wear one of these fun pieces.

I snatched up these cute pineapple studs in Charleston, SC during a fun bachelorette trip last summer but I’ve since picked up a few pineapple pieces over the past few weeks to brighten up some other wardrobe staples.

I wish I was holding a pineapple drink in hand on a tropical getaway, but until then I’ll be wearing a few of these instead.

I’ve rounded up a few of my favorites. Enjoy!

Bananas for Banana Nut Muffins

April 19, 2016

Y’all, these banana nut muffins are THE best. My husband always makes fun of me for saving my old bananas in the freezer, but they’re great for making muffins whenever you’re in the mood. I had two over ripe bananas on my counter, and I took two frozen bananas from my freezer stash to make this recipe.

IMG_2907crop

There are two amazing ingredients in this recipe that absolutely make it: cream cheese and Mexican vanilla.  The latter is my way of doctoring it up. I think Mexican vanilla has such a flavorful taste and we use it to punch up a lot of baked goods, homemade waffles, etc. We definitely aren’t paleo is my house! I just believe in eating a little of what you want or you’ll obsess over it.

IMG_2926

This is a recipe I found in Southern Living a few years ago and I’ve altered a little. My version is below, but you can find the original recipe here along with how to turn it into bread, too.  I prefer muffins since its kind of built-in portion control.

IMG_2915

They’re definitely a crowd-pleaser. I’ve brought these to work before and gifted them to neighbors and friends who recently brought home babies. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t love these muffins! And, they’re kid-friendly, too. Braden LOVES them. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

3/4 cup butter, softened

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened

1.5 cup of sugar

2 large eggs

3 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1.5 cups mashed bananas ( 4 medium bananas)

1.5 cups chopped pecans, toasted

1/2 tsp Mexican vanilla extract

Recipe:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat butter and cream cheese at medium speed with electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating until just blended after each addition.

Combine flour and next 3 ingredients gradually add to butter mixture, beating at low speed just until blended. Stir in bananas, pecans and vanillas. Place liners into4 paper-lined muffin cups. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. (My oven takes about 23 minutes, so watch it and test with a toothpick.)

Cool in pans 10 minutes. remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.

Makes 24 muffins. (I always seem to have extra so I end up make one mini banana nut loaf, too.)

Prep time: 15 minutes. Bake time: approx. 25 minutes.

Foundation

April 8, 2016

We have foundation! This happened on Thursday, and it’s a process that my husband has been very interested in, so he’s been going over there daily to micromanage check on things.

Trenching

Trenching to form the concrete beams of the foundation

Rebar and Cables

Moisture barrier, rebar and post tension cables. These cables will be tensioned up to 33,000 lbs in 7-10 days which will keep the foundation from cracking and shifting. Thanks, Ben, for that little tidbit 😉

Concrete Pump Truck

Photo Credit to our future next door neighbors who have been kind enough to keep us posted about the activity going on at the new house.

A parade of cement trucks came on the street around 7am. Pumping started at 8:45am and took about 1.5 hours to pump the concrete.

Concrete setting up

Braden Playing on the Slab

At 5pm Braden is the first family member to walk on the slab. At 27 lbs, Braden weighs the least in our family, so Ben felt he wasn’t going to hurt anything. He loves playing there, and we hope that’ll be a trend we continue when there’s walls and other livable spaces. 🙂

Marburger Farm Antique Show

April 7, 2016

I recently traveled  to Round Top, TX for the Marburger Farm Antique Show. This is about a 1.5 hour drive northwest of Houston. I’ve heard about this show from a few people and read that it’s one of the country’s best shows, so I thought it was worth making the trek. Since we’re building a home, I’ve been doing more window shopping lately. Normally, I hate going places without having a true purpose, but I’m still looking for home inspiration, especially on the decor front.  Overall, it was good to get a feel for the show and vendors since it comes twice a year —  March and September. I’ll definitely go back in the fall when we’re farther in the home building process, and I’ll have more specific pieces in mind. A few accessories caught my eye, and I did find two custom furniture stores I loved  as well. I plan to place an order for a pair of chairs that I think will look great in our new living room. The experience here as a first-timer was a tad overwhelming since there are 350 dealers from across the country in the show. I actually liked more of the vendors we saw along the way to the actual main Marburger Farm area.

I’m on the hunt for light fixtures, and I’d love something like this for the mudroom.

I think these jars are fun, and I’ve love to have them for a candy bar for a party, but would use them for pantry staples, too.

It took awhile to find the letters in the shapes I had in mind, but we went home with some good ones.

Who doesn’t like kettle corn?

Our only family pic of the day. Braden was in a mood at this point.

We bought some metal letters to hang up in the new house. It took awhile to find the shapes that I had in mind. This was our only real purchase of the day.  It was a nice mid-week day trip.

I would consider spreading  my next visit to Marburger Farm over two days so we can look at more vendors, but I’m glad we went on the first day and on a weekday — I can only imagine how crowded it gets on the weekend, especially with all those one lane, small town roads! Overall, we had a nice day despite the some light rain. I’ll definitely go again, but probably sans child. I wouldn’t want to spend most of the day strapped in a stroller after being in a car seat for awhile either. Well, actually, I’d really love if someone would push me around and ask me if I’m thirsty or hungry all day. Sounds pretty dreamy actually! Our day trip to Round Top was actually on my birthday so I’d say it was a simple, yet wonderful birthday adventure. Does that mean I’m super old now if I want to go hunting for antiques on my birthday?!

Sand and swim on my mind

April 5, 2016

1 | 2 | 3| 4 |5 | 6 | 7

I have a mental countdown clock ticking away until vacation. Shopbop has been a go-to for me the past few years and even more so lately since I do about 80% of my shopping online. They recently had a “Big Event” sale where I picked up a few items and thankfully they’re having one of their Friends and Family sales now. Enter INTHEFAM at checkout for 25% off full-price and sale items through 4/7.

A couple  of these items like this Marysia  top and bottom I’ve already picked up, but I have my eye on a few more for some events I have coming up including my Mexico trip.

Dreaming of sunny skies and sand beneath my toes until then.

Wanderlust: 5 amazing tropical getaways

March 30, 2016

I have the itch to take a beach vacation. Maybe it’s the sunny spring weather or perhaps it’s just spring fever + a toddler who likes to wake up at least once per night lately, but I NEED a vacation. We’re heading to Cancun in early June and I can’t wait! Facebook has been tormenting me with those “memories” posts, reminding me that  I’ve previously traveled quite a bit during this time frame over the years. I’m a March baby, so it was always common for me to be on a beach somewhere on my birthday.   Since Ben and I were married for awhile before we had the mini-me, we traveled quite a bit and beach vacations were always getaways we could agree on. So, in honor of my wanderlust, I’m bringing you my top 5 fave tropical escapes.

  1. Turks and Caicos – I could just live here. The pristine white sand is the epitome of what sand should be. And the water —  It’s perfection times ten. We went in November,  and it was the ideal time of year to go — right before Thanksgiving so we beat the crowds. We traveled to Providenciales, which is a 38-mile beach area that’s the most popular and developed place on the island. It wasn’t crowded at all. We stayed on the north side near Grace Bay at a resort that I highly recommend called Seven Stars. Y’all, it’s just heavenly. Turks and Caicos is recognized time and time again by Conde Nast, Travel and Leisure and so many more top-tier publications as one of the world’s best beaches, and I agree 150%. Just one of the best, most relaxing vacations of my life.

  2. St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands – this comes in a close second. If you love amazing beaches and you also like the outdoors, St. John is a wonderful place for you. I would definitely go back to this island, which is one of three of the U.S. Virgin Islands. We stayed in a cool house, sort of like a treehouse with nice decks and outdoor eating spaces. We were with family so the house worked well so we could enjoy more homemade meals. Food is pricey here at grocery stores, but so is going out to eat 6 days in a row. We loved this island because there were so many untouched beaches you could explore. One that is a must-see is called Trunk Bay. We just drove to beach after beach with snorkeling gear and waded through the most beautiful water that seemed like the biggest tropical fish tank. The island is very hilly, so driving around is quite the adventure, but renting a car was needed since we really explored the island, which is comprised mostly of a national park. We had a fabulous day on a private sail boat that was so beautiful. I would definitely go back to St. John. One of my friends is going to St. John for her honeymoon next month and I’d love to stay at Caneel Bay the next time I go, which is where she’s staying.St John Ben & LaureenSt John hobecat
  3. Grand Cayman – When you can take a 2.5 hour flight to a place this beautiful, why the heck not? We’re fortunate that Houston has so many direct flights to great places like Grand Cayman. This was Braden’s first flight and earned him his first passport stamp at 9 months. It was a wonderful first family beach vacation, and we stayed at  the Westin on Seven Mile Beach, which nicely accommodated having a baby in the room by providing a rollaway crib. Pack n plays are pretty terrible in my opinion, so not worrying about lugging that around took a little stress out of traveling with baby. I’ll have to do a whole other post about traveling with a baby one day because I feel like I’ve learned a ton over the past year flying with B. Grand Cayman is another beach that has beautiful turquoise water and soft sand. Not quite as soft as Turks and Caicos and St. John, though but I feel like I was kind of spoiled by experiencing those beforehand and now I compare everything to that! We went to Stingray City Sandbar while we were here and petted/swam/ran through the water shrieking once surrounded by stingrays. Definitely a memorable experience.Grand Cayman Baby First Trip
  4. Kauai, HI – A place that doesn’t require a passport, but it’s quite the long flight if you’re coming from many areas of the country. I’ve been to Oahu, HI before, but I would go back to Kauai every year if I could. I can’t really say the same for Oahu to be really honest.  Kauai isn’t too  touristy or crowded (we went in early March, probably before spring break season hit). It has some similarities to St. John because it has beautiful beaches and fantastic nature activities like hiking Waimea Canyon – a must see for sure. When I say nature, it’s like sensory overload in terms of how beautiful the mountains, canyons and beaches  are. We went hiking and took a helicopter tour around the island — totally  recommend that. We stayed on two sides of the island during our time there: the south side, Poipu Beach  and then Princeville. I liked the latter more, just because it was so breathtaking and we were closer to more outdoorsy areas we wanted to explore. We were just in awe of how beautiful this island was the whole time we were there. I’m glad we made the last-minute switch mid-trip to go to the other side of the island. We stayed at the Westin Princeville (I really like Starwoods hotels) and it was fabulous.Kauai (5)Kauai (4)Kauai (1)
  5. Costa Rica –  This is another quick direct flight for Houstonians, but I would recommend this tropical escape to anyone. We flew into Liberia, which is on the west side and stayed in a surf town called Tamarindo on the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica in a province called Guanacaste. It had beautiful beaches and a large wildlife refuge nearby. We snorkeled, went scuba diving one day and also did fun activities like taking ATVs through the jungle and ziplining. I’d love to go back to Costa Rica again and visit this area again and also explore other areas of the country as well.

There are a few places I’ve left off the list for now including Belize, Puerto Rico and lots of Mexican destinations including Cozumel, Puerta Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas. All amazing places that I’ll share another day.

What are your favorite beach getaways? I love hearing other people’s travel recommendations so please share!

Dotting your i’s and crossing your t’s

March 28, 2016

We had a fun-filled weekend  with brunch, egg hunting, Easter Sunday church service and dinner with friends.  It was the perfect weekend, especially since I had Friday off, which was soooooo needed.

easter egg hunt

We stopped by the house on Saturday since I hadn’t been there in a week or so. Ben went earlier in the week/he stops by there every other day or so to see the progress.  This week the underground plumbing was installed. Honestly, I didn’t really know what this meant, but my hubby, being the engineer he is cross-checked measurements with the plan — meaning he went out there and measured EVERYTHING and noticed that we were missing the plumbing for the bar sink. This would have been caught by the builder who was planning on walking the site the next day, but of course, Ben caught it first. Our builder always laughs at us and says he’s never worked with anyone like us (aka Ben) before because we’re very detail-oriented, and we like to know how and why things are happening a certain way. When Ben emailed him and said he found an error, he said that he would get it corrected and that he appreciates our attitude about things. We’re pretty easy-going people and we understand mistakes will be made. I’m glad we’re working with someone we trust, and I’m thankful my husband is a person who likes to get in the weeds about things!
