Gift Guide: All things blue & white

I’m definitely drawn to  blues and whites when it comes to home decor  these days. Blue tones seem to be more trendy, but I think it has a timeless quality as well. I know I’m not the only one who thinks this, as many of my favorite designers I follow on Instagram feature blue and white pieces like this in their home decor. Chinoiserie pottery or ginger jars seem to be quite popular especially in Southern homes. It’s a simple way to add a pop of color to neutral spaces. My top picks for all things blue and white are below. Many of these double as great hostess gifts!

Cozy blanket – I can’t quit this blanket. You may remember that I’ve featured in another gift guide here. I have it in two blue colors, including the navy blue version, that sits in my living room. Braden has the teal version that he uses every night and sits on his bed. You really can’t go wrong with this blanket. My friend gifted it to me 2 years ago, and I have been buying them as gifts for other people ever since. It’s on sale right now, too for less than $30!

I love these ginger jar ornaments. I snagged them on sale recently for a little tree I have on my entry way. Once it get it together, I’ll share a pic, but I think it would make a perfect hostess gift. Same with these chinoiserie ornaments.

Speaking of chinoiserie, you really can’t go wrong with a vase or jar like this. I have picked up most of my blue and white jars  at Home Goods, but William Sonoma has a lot of great options. I love these coasters as well!

I’d love to add these pillows somewhere in my house. I’m a fan of everything from her store! Another home item on my wish list is this tray. I like using trays to collect like-minded things so stuff doesn’t feel too cluttered. I actually have this print as a my guest room wallpaper.

I love a great coffee table book, especially if it doubles as travel inspiration. Let’s be real though — books can’t sit on my coffee table during this season of life because of my children, but they sit beautifully on a shelf and double as decor. 😉

An item I keep buying over and over again (and featured previously in this gift guide) and giving to people is this candle. It’s the BEST scent.

I wanted to share a few gift guides this year that are categorized a little differently. I’m sure I’ll have some for the toddler boy or baby girl later on since my littles pretty much consume my life and my shopping budget, but I also wanted to tee up my gift guides in a way that are helpful to you. I’ll be sharing a couple over the next few weeks until Christmas. First off, I’ve included gift picks for those who love bows! I’ve always been drawn to things with bows. Bows give a nice feminine and sophisticated touch to an outfit. I have several accessories with bows on them like these ribbon wrapped hoop earrings, mules, and several tops I’ve collected over the years. I’ve noticed bows popping up even more lately, so I’m sure the gals in your life might like at least one of these items on the list!  This lamp is a splurge and totally on my wish list. I’d love a pair! Do you hear that Santa? 😉

Gift Guide for Dads + Father’s Day Recipe Ideas

gift guide, fathers day gifts, gifts for dadWe’re a little over a week away from Father’s Day so I thought I’d share my picks for gifts for the dads in your life. I did consult with my husband on a few of these, and I think many of these things are right up his alley. But, I did think about some different life stages (i.e. the new dad) that a lot of my friends are going through when I rounded up my selections. I think there is a little bit of everything on this gift guide!

My husband, Ben, is a what I call a hobbyist. He has a lot of interests, and I affectionately refer to him as my “Ben of all trades.” If you follow me on Instagram, you have probably seen me post his DIY projects, making beer, prepping for hunting season, making his own bullets or tinkering around in the garage on the 240z he rebuilt.  I’m very thankful to have a handy husband who is also the best dad to Braden. Some may say that I’m lucky, but I also tell people I just chose well. 😉

  1. New dad who might be a little sleepless: This book is funny, and you need a little funny when you’re lacking sleep.
  2. Craft beer lover: This beer flight holder is a fun way to sample a variety of beers. My husband also brews beer…a recent hobby he started in the past few months, which basically creates happy hour in the garage for everyone on our street. He’s currently brewing three beers and a cider that’ll be ready next week when I’m 37 weeks pregnant. :/
  3. Handy man: Any dad who is into DIY projects or Fixer Upper would like this hat.
  4. Grilling aficionado: this grilling set would get some good use especially now that we’ve hit the summer grilling season. Plus,  it’s only $12.99!
  5. Dehydrated dad: Ben definitely doesn’t drink enough water and often tells me beer has water in it. Hmmm….not the same in my opinion. I probably didn’t drink enough water until I got one of these insulated water bottles a couple of years ago. It’s hands-down my favorite water bottle, and I use it every day because I love how it truly keeps water cold for 24 hours. I am definitely getting this for my husband. It comes in a 17 oz. size and a bigger 25 oz. size, and the teakwood option sort of looks manly, right?!
  6. Dad who loves games: Once upon a time my husband would play poker with friends pretty regularly, then we had a kid. 🙂 This poker set would be fun for game night with the guys or when extended family is in town visiting.
  7.  Smoked meat lover: My husband has a Traeger tailgater, but after using a Pitboss, Ben says he “would like to get a larger Pitboss instead because it has more features and it’s a better design from an engineering standpoint.” Spoken like an engineer. 😉
  8. Classic dad: my husband got this watch for Christmas, and he wears it pretty much every day. I shared more about it in this post. It’s a classic watch that I know he’ll have forever and the wood tone is unique.
  9. Dad who loves to experiment with flavor: Lots of grilling going on around here so this rub and grilling set would be a good gift to pair with a new grill or the grilling set mentioned above.
  10. Sentimental new dad: I think it’s an ongoing game to get your first child to say dada or mama first. This book is the ideal gift for a couple’s shower or just for any new dad.
  11. Dad with a sweet tooth: Who doesn’t love  icecream?! This is the perfect gift for dads who live in a different state since you can get a variety pack shipped and delivered anywhere in the U.S. This brand used to be a client of mine, so I know a lot about this icecream. It’s made with premium ingredients, and they have amazing flavors including low-glycemic options.   I’d like to think I’m an icecream expert, especially lately since it’s something I enjoy daily (especially at 9 months pregnant!). The salted caramel chocolate chip is one of my fave flavors!

Father’s Day Meal Ideas

Father’s Day is a reminder to tell the dads in your life that they’re special and appreciated. So, we will usually cook at home for occasions like this. I’ve suggested a few meals below that are perfect for a memorable family get together.

My husband is definitely a steak and potatoes guy, so I’ll probably make a dinner that highlights these items since those are some of his favorites. See below for dinner and dessert suggestions, many of which I’ve made before, so I can vouch for their yumminess!

Prime Rib, Baked Potatoes and Grilled Corn on the Cob with Roasted Jalepeno Butter

Southern Shrimp and Grits – if we’re out to dinner, my husband usually goes for steak, short ribs or a shrimp and grits dish

Nectarine and Blueberry Crisp

I would serve all of these with Bluebell Homemade Vanilla Ice cream vs. whipped cream (or in addition to) like some of the recipes suggest. We’re pretty loyal to Bluebell around here because… well, because we’re Texan and it’s like the epitome of Texas. And, it’s just delicious.

When we’re on a date night and even on a regular weeknight, it’s not uncommon to find an old-fashioned in my husband’s hand. That said, a bourbon Ben has been a fan of lately is Walking Stick, so that might be a good gift  if the guy in your life is a fan of bourbon. It’s sold at Spec’s in Houston if you’re local. Getting the dad in your life his favorite drink ingredients or bottle of wine to enjoy with a homemade meal is always a good idea! Enjoy!

Gift Picks for Mom

This one is for the mamas! I’ve rounded up a few easy gifts to get mom this Mother’s Day and categorized them for easy reference. All of these gifts are under $65. In fact, all but one item are under $50. You don’t have to spend a ton of $$ to make mom feel special. I love homemade cards, a special  breakfast and just having a little ‘me’ time, so just try to do something thoughtful and I’m sure it’ll go over well!

1. Southern mama/Fixer Upper fan mom: I pre-ordered Joanna’s new cookbook, and I have many pages flagged already of things I want to make. If you like comfort food, or some good ol’ Southern staples like King Ranch Chicken and Chicken Spaghetti Casserole, then this book will be right up your alley. As soon as I start making any of these delicious recipes (probably this weekend) I’ll be sure to share!

2. Mama who needs a little extra ‘me’ time: This is my favorite candle EVER. It has a bit of subtle smell that reminds me of vacation. The volcano scent is my favorite. Select ‘pick up in store’ and then do a quick drive by to have it waiting for you. This is also a great item to have one hand for one of those last minute hostess or teacher gifts!

3. Casual mom: I love casual t-shirts like this one. Pair it with a blazer for a more elevated look or with denim shorts when running errands.

4. Home cook/hostess mama: You can’t go wrong with a pretty dish towel. Pair it with one of the cookbooks I’ve mentioned for an extra special touch.

5. Cozy mom: One of my friends got this super soft blanket for me for Christmas in navy, and it is used almost daily in my living room. Braden loves it so much that I recently bought him one for his bed that he sleeps with every night because he kept taking the one from downstairs. It’s soooo soft and cozy, and I’ll probably buy the pink peony color soon for the new baby’s room to drape over the rocker.

6. Healthy mom: If you’re looking for a healthy cookbook that is centered on real food, or perhaps one that caters to people who eat gluten-free or dairy-free, this is a good one. I just got it a few weeks ago and have several recipes flagged like Zucchini Almond Butter Brownies or Shrimp and Scallop Linguine with Veggies. I’ll report back!

7. Mom with the green thumb: I am not much of a gardener, but both my mom and MIL are, so this book is a good option for the women in your life who are all about the plant lady life.

8. Sentimental mom: This interview journal is a  sweet way to document all the special things about mom and the moments you’ve had with her over the years. I personally would love this, and I bet most moms would agree!

9. Mom who loves to entertain: Raise your hand if you love a glass or wine or two to unwind?!  I think this ice mold/wine bottle chiller is practical and adorable. It’s a great gift for a mom who loves to play hostess since she can make this into a fun little centerpiece.

10. Tea loving mom: I know many women who would enjoy this tea sampler. What mom doesn’t need a quiet moment with an afternoon tea pick-me-up?!

11. Homebody mama: I love me some cozy pajamas, and this brand makes really soft, quality PJs at a great price point that are so, so comfortable and last forever. I have two pairs in a shorty set and a long PJ set. You won’t regret this classic style.
