White denim mixed with a soon-to-be fall shoe favorite

August 2, 2016

With summer winding down,  I’m trying to get the most out of my summer favorites. White denim is definitely a spring and summer must-have piece and a closet staple that is so versatile.  I’ve had my favorite pair of white jeans for more than three years, so I’m really getting a lot out of them since they were more of an investment pair. Since I work in a casual work environment, I can get away with wearing white denim  and dressing it up with a blazer or cardigan to make it look a bit more polished.  I ended up getting another two pairs of jeans this spring, and I rotate all three regularly. And, off-the-shoulder  tops have also been pushed to the front of my closet during these warm weather months as well. I plan on sporting this  top for a couple more months since it’s navy, which makes it easier to transition into fall.

Back to the denim. I thought I’d share how I’m wearing two of my summer staples — white denim shorts and jeans — right now.

I wore this outfit (the shorts version) to an early dinner on Saturday night with B & B. We tried the new Liberty Kitchen in Garden Oaks.  It has the same great food as the sister restaurants (AMAZING lobster mac & cheese) and they have good options for kiddos, which makes life a little easier these days.

I recently picked up these fringe heels from Ann Taylor online (I’m a huge fan of AT shoes, as I’ve previously mentioned here) and they’re SO fun and comfy. They have the perfect heel height  – 3.5 inches. The fringe plus the suede — just so fall. I can’t wait to incorporate them into fall outfits, but I feel like they can totally work now as well. Wearing them with white denim and these whimsical tassel earrings makes them very summer date night appropriate.

Suede, fringe and the perfect heel height all in one. These shoes will be a fall favorite for sure.

Now a question I’m a little on the fence about: I don’t really believe in the “Don’t wear white after Labor Day rule” because it’s so hot in Texas you can still wear shorts through October most of the time. But, I typically retire white denim after September and move on to cream-colored denim. Sounds a bit ridiculous, I know.

Yay or nay to white denim after Labor Day?

Cold shoulder navy top from Ann Taylor no longer available, but I’ve linked to a few similar options: here, here and here. | Jeans: Joe’s jeans. I also have this more budget-friendly pair. | Shorts: Gap | Earrings: J.Crew (other great colors available and a similar blue version here) | Bracelet: Madewell  cuff and cork bangle ( old from J.crew ) | Shoes: Ann Taylor heels and Dolce Vita flats

Gingham + White distressed denim

February 27, 2017

I feel like this outfit screams Southern mom-on-the-go. Even on the weekends, it seems like we’re going a mile a minute. I can’t tell you how many trade offs with Braden we did this weekend, picking him from Ben so he could run an errand or vice versa.

Let’s face it: we pretty much skipped winter this year, so I’m busting out all the brights and whites.  I’ve always been drawn to navy and white combo so I definitely gravitate toward a gingham print. This long-sleeved top is really lightweight so it also would be perfect paired with white shorts when the days get even hotter in Houston Plus, it has this fun button-up back detail which makes it a little breezy. If you know me, I wear a lot of flats. It’s just so much easier sometimes to prioritize comfort first. I tend to wear a lot of colored shoes, which always brings a little something extra to neutral outfits.

I LOVE white denim, and I recently picked up another pair that’s only $59. I don’t like to spend a lot on distressed denim, and this pair is SO soft. And, they’re long enough. That’s always an issue for me since I’m nearly 5’10 and pretty much all legs.

Outfit details: Gingham top | White distressed denim | Orange flats (old) similar here | B & B necklace (charms and necklace separate pieces)

I’ve linked to a few other gingham prints that I wouldn’t mind having in my closet:

Gingham off-shoulder top |button up gingham | Navy gingham shirt for men – I have been to events to parties and multiple guys have  been wearing this shirt!

I know I am overdue on sharing the progress of the #lucasfamilyhome. A quick update on the home front: good news is we sold our current house, and we’re closing at the end of March.  Totally need to start packing by the way. However, on the new house, that process is pretty much been a nightmare.  We’ve been having a lot of issues with our builder and therefore, we’ve experienced a ton of delays. It’s extremely frustrating. So frustrating, in fact, that I’ve tried to sit down and write about it but I honestly just get really angry when I rehash the BS our builder has put us through. I will share more, but for now, I’ll just say it’s like having a second toddler.  Poor listening skills, lying to your face, selective retention, etc. Fun times. (I will say, Braden is really easy-going toddler, so I can’t complain too much about my mini me.)

Everyday Casual: White Bohemian Top

April 19, 2018

The weather has been pretty amazing lately especially for running around in casual outfits.  As I’ve mentioned here, I’ve been trying to make non-maternity pieces work for my wardrobe, and this topis a perfect example of just that. White shirts are a closet staple for me, so adding another simple cotton top with a little flair like this one is right up my alley. I love that it’s a little loose (ideal for my growing bump) and has a bit of a bohemian feel to it. It actually reminds me of something I’d wear for a Cinco de Mayo party, so maybe I’ll do just that! I wore it a few days ago to a fiesta-themed child’s birthday, so sort of the same?!

I’m wearing a small tall, which is my true size in this brand. If I don’t get a tall, the shirts aren’t usually long enough for me.  I’m 5’10 for reference. I’m been wearing these denim shorts quite a bit, and I’m sure that will just continue as we start feeling the heat here in Houston. I recently picked up this distressed pair  of denim shorts (size small) that fit me a bit better, so I like them more overall. So, if you’re pregnant I’d try these instead of the ones I’m wearing in these pictures. I’ve linked a few additional pairs in the widget below.

A quick bumpdate:

I’m feeling pretty good, minus the normal pregnancy back pain. The chiropractor and I are BFFs. 😉 I am 28 weeks now, which is the start of the third trimester. Some days I can’t believe I’m to this point since I didn’t get this far in my last pregnancy; I just feel incredibly grateful to be going through this period. I’m told the placenta previa I had that put me on bedrest at the beginning of the second trimester has gone away, so that’s good news! The baby is SUPER active, and I often wake up in the middle of the night from a swift kick in the belly or from turning to a different side.  I am trying to cherish these little moments because I know this is the last time I will feel this, as we’re pretty set on being done after this kid. I remember missing the feeling of the baby kicking after Braden was born. It’s just such a cool feeling and is a nice reminder that pregnancy/childbirth are pretty remarkable in general.

I am definitely nesting and have been on a mission to get certain things around the house updated before baby arrives. I REALLY need to think about her room, and when we will be making the official switch to Braden’s new room. I did order wallpaper samples recently and picked up some paint colors last week, so at least I’ve done a few things. I’m not sure if I want to do wallpaper or not, but we’ll see. Ben would vote no if he had his way. I am pretty busy with work right now, so I can’t really do too much until I wrap up a project at the end of the month so none of the baby projects will be making any progress until then. I’ll be in uber-nesting mode come May and June, I’m sure.

The Classics: Part 1 – the perfect white shirt

January 6, 2017
classic white shirt pleated cuff

white-shirt-3 white-shirt-4 white shirt pleated cuff

white-shirt-6  white-shirt-8

white-shirt-10 I don’t like the word “resolution.” It makes me think there was some sort of conflict to overcome and that just sounds a bit negative. During the process of building our home and prepping for the move, I’ve realized I have too much stuff. So, a goal for 2017 is to focus more on the classics. I certainly gravitate more toward  classic pieces, especially as I’ve gotten older and invested more in wardrobe staples that may be a tad pricier but are higher quality. I have friend who would laugh at me when I’d talk about investment pieces and how I think about things from a cost versus use standpoint. I was saying this 15 years ago, and I believe it more now than ever! I’m also really good at taking care of those investment pieces. I will take the time to spray suede shoes with an all-weather protector prior to wearing, get shoes re-soled or have a handbag handle replaced if it starts to get worn. I’ve been a caretaker/mom my whole life, even to my stuff!  When it comes to style investment pieces, I think denim is worth the splurge if it’s a flattering dark denim that will not go out of style. Colored or distressed denim? Well, I’ll probably spend less.

All that said, a timeless staple that every woman should have is the perfect white button-up shirt. This is something that you don’t have to spend a ton on! The versatility of a white button-up shirt is infinite. I love this shirt I picked up recently because it had a modern twist with the pleated cuff. And, I love it even more because the sleeves are actually long enough for this long-limbed lady. I can wear this to work with a blazer and swap out my bag to go to dinner/happy hour on a weeknight. No outfit change=less laundry. I currently have 5 unfolded loads sitting in my gameroom right now taunting me. The laundry fairy was off during the holiday break.

Bottom line: 2017 the year to truly live by the mantra that less is more. I know myself and that doesn’t mean I’m going on a spending freeze. Let’s get real. (Sorry, Ben.) But, I will aim to be more thoughtful, focusing on the timeless pieces I’ll wear for years instead of just a few months.

I’ll be back with more on the topic of  ‘Classics’ soon! 🙂

Bright Yellow Tassel Top & Memorial Weekend Sale Round up

May 26, 2017

yellow tassel top, white denim laureenloves.com

I’m really embracing yellow lately. It makes me feel instantly cheery, and if an outfit can help boost your mood, why not? I’m wearing my go-to white summer denim that I previously wore in this post with this fun tassel top that I picked up for Cinco de Mayo.

I wore this outfit when we went to dinner in Maui recently. Tassels have been everywhere this season. From tops to accessories like clutches or straw beach totes, I’ve seen them a lot but haven’t taken part in this trend until now.

I’ve found a couple of other yellow tops that I love like this one shoulder top and this adorable yellow eyelet tassel top  that are similar since this exact top is sold out. The top I’m wearing is still available in black and white, though. For reference, I’m a small. (I’m typically a small most tops from AT.)

Outfit details: Top (sold out, see similar links to yellow tops linked above) | White denim | Shoes | Clutch | Earrings (old) | Bracelet (old)

A little life catch-up

I’m SO looking forward to having a three day weekend. We’re making a quick trip to go to my nephew’s birthday in San Antonio. I really need to do some unpacking and organizing this weekend. We moved into the house about a month ago, but I haven’t been home on the weekends since we’ve lived in the new house so I haven’t spent as much time getting organized like I’ve desperately needed to. And, it’s just not going to happen in the evenings after a full work day so I really need my weekends for this. We were in Maui for a week and got back on a Monday morning, May 15, after taking a red eye flight, and I had a client meeting at 4 pm that same day. (Horrible idea, but too many scheduling conflicts so it was my only option.) Then, Ben left the very next day at 5am to go to Midland for a week. So, I was on single parent duty for one week with a toddler whose clock was all messed up because of the Hawaii time difference, and I had to jump back into a crazy work schedule. No bueno, y’all. We are loving our new neighborhood and have some great neighbors with kids the same age as Braden and they have all become fast friends. It will be so nice to see these kids grow up together. But, to add to my week of transition, one older woman, a neighbor, who had really become quite chatty with Ben during our home construction and was very nice to us during the building process basically texted Ben out of the blue the day after we got back from vacation. This was the nastiest, most judgemental  text message. It was apalling actually. It’s sort of a long story, but she basically said we were sacrificing Braden’s happiness by being overly ambitious ( I can only assume she has problems with women who work outside the home) and that I was basically a bad mom. Talk about judgemental! If you want to tick a mom off really fast, then call her parenting skills into question. Needless to say, I will not be interacting with her anymore and she is pretty much on my sh*t list.

So, Ben is back home and all feels right again. I am very fortunate that I have a true partner of a husband, and he is such a hands-on dad. When he goes away, we manage but things are definitely easier when he’s here. My world is just better with both my B&b.

I’ll be recapping our Maui trip soon, so stayed tuned for more on that front!

I’ve rounded up a few of the Memorial weekend sales that I’m eyeing. I have a whole list of things on my home wish list so I will definitely be doing some online shopping over the weekend.

Shades of grey to wear

February 7, 2017

I tend to gravitate toward grey items in my wardrobe. There’s an effortless quality about a soft shade of grey and it also goes from season to season making it versatile with other wardrobe staples like white denim. I have my eye on these items and most would make great Valentine’s Day gifts, too. Hint, hint. 🙂

I love the idea of wearing these grey earrings with an off the shoulder white top and white denim. And, you can’t have enough workout leggings.  I have a few pairs of high waisted Zella leggings that I run around all weekend in. Then there’s shoes: you just can never have too many!

Shopbop Sale Picks: A Mix of Basics and Vacation Favorites

March 1, 2018
Shopbop sale, OTS, distressed denim shorts, English Factory, Straw beach tote

I’ve linked several items I have that are available in the Shopbop sale. I own the majority of these affordable staple items like this pair of denim or this classic white top, and I get a ton of use out of them. I use the Shopsale to stock up on essentials and also get a few trendy pieces each year that won’t break the bank. I recently picked up a smaller straw handbag on Day 1 of the sale, and I don’t see it anymore – boo! But, I’ve linked a few others that I think are perfect. I’ve had this large straw tote for 3 years, and it’s a great carry-on when traveling and transitions well with vacation wear. I used it a lot when we went to Maui last year. I also noticed this OTS top, which I bought last year during a the spring Shopbop sale is still available and it’s only $16. Total steal! It’s final sale, and I’m wearing a medium for easy reference.

See a few of my other sale picks in the widget below. The sale ends on March 3 at 11:59 PT. Happy shopping!

Off the shoulder top with stripes

OTS, denim shorts, casual summer look

OTS, denim shorts

OTS, summer casual, distressed denim shorts, english factory, shopbop

Oh, how I wish I were in Maui sporting this outfit! I brought this simple white off-the-shoulder top with stripe detail with me to Maui a few weeks ago and paired it distressed denim, a go-to for me these days since it’s really starting to get HOT. Both the top and denim shorts are both pretty affordable, especially the OTS top, which I picked up during the Shopbop sale a few weeks ago and also featured here.

This denim can be a little short for some, but here is another pair I wear a lot that are still a good price point that aren’t as showy.  I will say, I am pretty leggy being nearly 5’10 so I think things just look shorter on me because I’m basically a giraffe. I think everyone should have a pair of casual denim shorts because they’re just so, so versatile as we enter these next few months. I can get multiple wears out of them without washing, too. Tip: hang to dry. You don’t want them to get any smaller (or tighter!) after going through the dryer. I am REALLY particular about the way I do laundry.  I feel like it’s helped me really extend the life of some of my clothes, especially investment pieces like classic denim. Maybe I’ll do a post on that soon…would you want to read that?

Side note: It’s been nice having the hubs home for two weeks so he can scratch things off our family to-do list (so much house stuff going on still. I’m not sure if it will ever end). He took on a different role at work so this is a new thing for us with an short-term, indefinite timeframe. I’m starting to get a little anxious about him leaving again next week. Eeek. Braden will be three in August, and I think that “threenager” stage is hitting us. Also, he just simply adores Ben. Like full on obsessed with his dad. It’s so sweet they have that bond, but sometimes I’m like…hey there, mom is here. I can be fun, too (in between making you eat peas and shoving vitamins down your mouth.). So threenager, mixed with all the change…pray for me, y’all. I just bought two more potty books and a sticker potty chart on Amazon last night. We’re breaking out all the stops including bribery, candy, etc. Sorry if you don’t care, but figuring out how to get my kid to poop on the toilet is basically a part-time job for me right now. #glamorous #momlife

I’m heading to my brother and sister-in-law’s  baby shower this weekend. I will be an aunt to twins — both a boy and girl  — come this August/September! Yea!

Hope y’all have a great weekend!

Fashion + Style Loving Lately... Travel

Shades of blue I’m loving lately…

May 18, 2017

blue and white summer fashion, beach style

It was definitely tough coming back from a week long vacation. I am still dreaming of the beach, so I thought I’d share a few pieces that I’m loving right now inspired by the beautiful Maui beaches.

My mini-me keeps asking, “When are we going to the ocean, Mama?”  I hope again soon! In the meantime, maybe I’ll just dress like I’m going there. 😉

Casual workwear

May 10, 2017

suede blocked heels, red blazer, distressed denim, casual workwear, white Jcrew shirt

I have been working a ton lately, so I thought it was fitting to share a workwear post.  This is very typical everyday work outfit for me. My 9-5, (or 9-7pm+, as many who work in my industry know) is a relatively casual environment. I can get away wearing jeans half the week unless I have client meetings. I work in PR & marketing, by the way. I feel like jeans can really be dressed up in the work environment, especially when you throw a blazer or other jacket/cardigan with them.  Because my day changes so rapidly and I often get pulled into meetings at the last minute where I have to look more put together, this is a go-to outfit using classics that I can wear during multiple seasons.

The jeans I’m wearing are probably a tad more casual than what I would wear to work most days, but if I don’t have any client meetings, I think these are great. I love the distressed ends and they were a steal, too. If I am wearing flats I would uncuff the ends.

I have been on the hunt of a red blazer that had arms long enough for a while. When I saw this one came in a tall, I knew it would become a closet staple. Speaking of closet staples, I bought these suede block heels  a few weeks ago when Ann Taylor had a 50% off sale. I’ve mentioned here, but I am such a big Ann Taylor shoe fan. Their shoes are stylish, comfortable, well-made and are always at such a great price point.

And, I couldn’t pass up this linen-like popover shirt. It has a texture to it that makes look more polished since linen can get pretty wrinkly.

I am so overdue for a house update, y’all. We moved into the #lucasfamily home about three weeks ago and it has been chaotic. Our house is probably 95% done, so we still have people installing closet shelves, doing touch up paint, etc. so we can’t get fully settled until that gets done. It’s sort of a stressful environment to live in, especially while having and toddler and working crazy hours the past two weeks. I’m so thankful we had some family come the first week to help unpack us because honestly, we just didn’t have the time. I was out of town one weekend for work two weeks ago, and we’re now in Maui for a much needed vacation.  Then, Ben leaves for a week for a work trip the day after we get back from Hawaii. We’re pretty much non-stop over here!

I have not been able to unpack many boxes except for in the evening once B goes to bed, and my energy level to do that is pretty much nonexistent. We’re slowly but surely getting there and now that a lot of the little things around the house are getting finished, I’m hoping to establish a normal routine again!
